Located in the Inyo National Forest of Madera and Mono Counties, Mammoth Lakes is home to a sought after ski area on the Mono County side. Mammoth Mountain was formed after a series of volcano eruptions that ended 57,000 years ago. Yosemite National Park, Devils Postpile and Rainbow Falls National Monument, Mono Lake, Bodie State Historic Park, Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, Mt. Whitney and the Mammoth Lakes Basin are all short day trips from town. Mammoth features amazing geological features including granite domes, craters, fissures, lava tubes, symmetrical columns of basalt, saline lakes, outcroppings of white quartz and pure black obsidian, warm creeks and natural hot springs and pools.

The Mammoth Mountain Ski Area was founded by Dave McCoy in 1953. Many snowboarders, skiers, and snowmobilers flock to Mammoth Mountain during the cold and snowy winter mountains. One of the hottest ski resorts towns in California, Mammoth gets an unusually large amount of snowfall compared to other Eastern Sierra peaks.

The cracked and jagged ribs of the great Sierra Nevada run through it all; the highest range in the Continental U.S. and one of the youngest and most tectonically active mountain ranges on the planet. Sculpted by glaciers and rivers, the flanks of these mountains are now covered in ancient forests of fir and pine. In the high valleys and basins are icy blue lakes and streams populated by frogs and wild trout, and meadows teeming with wildflowers.

During the summer, the ski gondolas continue moving and many mountain bikers and hikers head into the valley. The lake also serves as a tourist attraction during the warmer summer months. The roads to Devils Postpile National monument open up and you can go see the one hundred one foot Rainbow Falls. Activities include boating, kayaking and paddle boarding!

In autumn, the trees change colors and the landscape is transformed into what looks like an impressionist painting. Another benefit of fall? Less tourists! If you’re not into adventure, then head down to town and enjoy a plethora of shopping and restaurants. You can still busy for hours (heck - days!) hanging out in town.
