Often simply called Carmel, this dreamy beach city was officially founded in 1902. However, it has historic roots that date nearly 5 centuries back. It is filled to the brim with historic sites and spots. Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo was founded in 1770 and was originally in Monterey. It was then relocated to Carmel by Junipero Serra. In 1784, Serra passed away and was buried here.
After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake that destroyed the city, many of SF’s creatives headed down south the Carmel. Musicians, writers, painters and other various artists inundated the community and thus began the transformation of Carmel into a hub for creatives. This creative spirit still lives on today with many art galleries, artistic spots and a free and creative spirit remaining in the city today.
